Willi Orban leads the RB in the Champions League in injury time

RB Leipzig will also play in the Champions League next season. A goal in the final by Willi Orban for the 1-1 (90 + 3) ensured the necessary point for the Saxons on Saturday in Arminia Bielefeld. It is RB’s fifth Champions League appearance in six years. Janni Serra puts Arminia ahead in the 70th minute.

Six league games: only three wins

For the Saxons, the change of coach paid off at the end of 2021: when Domenico Tedesco took over from his predecessor Jesse March, the wealthy Leipzig was eleventh. Next Saturday in the cup final against Freiburg, Leipzig also have a chance to win their first ever title.

However, Saturday’s performance raised no hope. Leipzig’s performance curve has been pointing down for weeks. RB has lost three of their last six official matches and missed the Europa League final.

At the same time, SC Freiburg missed participation in the Champions League for the first time. Coach Christian Streich’s side lost 2-1 (0-0) at Bayer Leverkusen on the last matchday and failed to overtake RB Leipzig at the final table.

The sports club finished sixth after the dress rehearsal for the DFB Cup final and secured a ticket to the Europa League for the second time. To qualify for the premier class, SC would have had to win the match and hope for a defeat against Leipzig at Arminia Bielefeld.

Haberer makes RB tremble

The joker team can already take revenge on the long-distance duel lost on the big stage next Saturday (20:00 / ARD and Sky): in Berlin, Breisgauer and the Saxons fight in the final of the DFB Cup for the biggest triumph in their respective history of the club.

Lucas Alario (54 ‘) and Exequiel Palacios (90’ + 7 ‘) scored the hosts’ goals in front of 30,210 spectators in the sold-out BayArena, giving Rudi Völler the farewell gift he had hoped for.

The 62-year-old spent his last game as sporting director of the Leverkusen team. Janik Haberer (88th) scored the visitors’ equalizer in the final stages.
