VW works council chief Cavallo honestly: “Jobs are being lost”

It is an exciting and pivotal time for VW. The group is increasingly switching to the production of electric cars.

But change doesn’t always bring good things. Therefore it has VW– the head of the works council Daniela Cavallo now clearly puts it – and this should not encourage the employees.

Is VW kicking out employees?

With VW’s electronic offensive, the production of combustion cars in particular is changing. The goal is to sell more electric cars than gasoline-powered ones by 2030. This causes some employees to panic: are their jobs at stake? In an interview with “taz”, Daniela Cavallo has now admitted that “we know that electromobility and digitalization will certainly lead to job losses,” said the head of the works council.

This is Volkswagen:

  • Volkswagen AG was founded in 1937
  • The group also includes the brands Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini and Porsche
  • In 2018, the Wolfsburg-based company produced around 40 models under the Volkswagen name
  • In 2019, around 22% of all new registrations were VW cars

He is aware that the workforce is therefore afraid, but not of the loss of jobs. Because obviously employees are also needed for the production of electric cars. Rather, they are afraid of how their work environment might change.

VW wants to take care of a solution

“I watched the pilot production there. These are clinically clean rooms, some of the employees are wearing full coveralls, “said Cavallo al” taz. “This is something where the workforce then develops fears.” According to the head of the works council, this is taken seriously and the solutions are already being developed.
