With an efficient performance, Union Berlin clinched a win at SC Freiburg on Matchday 33 of the Bundesliga and are again represented in the European Cup next season.
Difficult to overcome initially in terms of effectiveness, Union Berlin laid the foundations for a 4-1 (3-0) victory at SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday (7 May 2022) and can already start for a Champions Cup scheduled for next season.
Grischa Prömel (11th), Captain Christopher Trimmel (30th) and Sheraldo Becker (41st) made it clear in the first half in a duel between two Champions Cup aspirants, Andras Schäfer for the final point (90th). Lucas Höler scored Freiburg’s second goal in the second half to 3-1 (59th).
Good starting position for both teams
On the 33rd and penultimate day of play, Union moved up to sixth place with 54 points. Mathematically, even the Champions League qualification for the Bundesliga final is still conceivable for the “Iron”. Freiburg is also in the running for the European Cup with 55 points, but has lost its good starting position in the fight for the “premium class”.
On the way to their third consecutive away win, Berlin looked compact as usual and waited for counterattack opportunities. Coach Urs Fischer’s plan worked from the start. After winning the ball, Becker ran off to the right. His pass to the center pushed Taiwo Awoniyi in the direction of the goal from eight meters. The ball bounces inside the post for Prömel, who scores 1-0.
Lucas Höler unlucky – Sheraldo Becker exceptional
Freiburg struggled, just developed a move to score and then had bad luck when a goal from Höler was denied recognition due to a handball in development according to video evidence (23rd).
The Union is quite different: Trimmel heads a nice cross from Becker and leads the 2-0 and before the break Becker, amazing in the first half, scores after another counterattack on the right from a tight angle for the 3-0.
A breath of fresh air with Nils Petersen
But like last time with 3: 3 against Mönchengladbach or 4: 3 at Hoffenheim, Freiburg showed resilience and increased pressure in the second round. With substitute Nils Petersen as second striker, manager Christian Streich created another pass to center. Upon submission by Höler, the Freiburg “Super-Joker” had a huge opportunity to score a goal shortly after the second half (54th). But his header just went further.
Urs Fischer after qualifying for Europe: “I’m happy. I’m proud”
Shortly thereafter, Höler was recalled to celebrate for the second time as his goal should have come from an offside position. But this time the VAR corrected the referee team around Felix Brych in the other direction. Freiburg went up to 1: 3.
The hosts worked hard to catch up in the final sprint, but Berlin’s experienced defense didn’t allow more goals to be conceded. But Schäfer clarified everything after winning the ball with a solo from the left half of the penalty area with 4: 1.
Decision for SCF in Leverkusen
Freiburg must now win at Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Matchday 34 and hope for a stumbling block from Leipzig to qualify for the Champions League again. At the same time, Berlin can perfect their season at home against VfL Bochum on 14 May from 3.30pm with a win and even finish fourth if Freiburg and Leipzig make mistakes.
