VfL Wolfsburg: Marcel Schäfer passes management exam – Bundesliga

School’s out!

Two years ago, the DFL and DFB launched the “Management in Professional Football” course. Marcel Schäfer (37) of Wolfsburg was part of the driver class. The months of cramming are now over, the final exam done.

On Tuesday evening, the former professional received the “Management in professional football” certificate along with 14 other participants. Ansgar Schwenken (58 / member of the DFL board of directors) and DFB director Oliver Bierhoff (54) were responsible for awarding the certificates.

Pastore passes the exam!

“Of course I am happy that I have successfully completed the course,” Schäfer tells BILD. “It was a good moment. The exchange with my colleagues was very useful and I was able to deepen and broaden my knowledge.”

The former professional defender continued: “I have to say we were a very harmonious team. We also met and exchanged ideas outside of the courses. The contacts will remain and will be useful in the future.”

However, a small celebration for passing the exam was not possible: “At the moment there is no time for that because there is a lot of work on the table”.

Incidentally, the course mainly covered three areas of expertise: Bundesliga know-how, sports know-how and managerial know-how. No problem for the shepherds.

He has been sporting director of Wolfsburg since the summer of 2018 and works closely with managing director Jörg Schmadtke (58). Both have recently taken VfL to the Champions League. This season then the collapse with the long struggle to avoid relegation. Only on Matchday 32 did Lower Saxony manage to stand up.

Schmadtke will make a stop at Wolfsburg at the end of January 2023. Schäfer will inherit the former professional goalkeeper and become a new strongman at VfL.

The other graduates on the course also want to start. Stefan Kießling (38 / assistant manager at Bayer Leverkusen), Sascha Riether (39 / license coordinator at Schalke 04) and Christian Gentner (36 / FC Lucerne) also received their coaching diploma.
