Value Creation: BASF Share Friendly: BASF Announces Large-Scale Black Matter Recycling Facility | news

The chemical giant has announced the construction of a large-scale plant for the extraction of so-called black matter from old batteries at the Schwarzheide site in Lusatia as a final step. It is scheduled to go into operation in early 2024, as announced by BASF in Ludwigshafen. About 30 jobs are planned.

Black mass occurs during mechanical treatment of old batteries. Contains the most important metals used for the manufacture of cathode materials: lithium, nickel, cobalt and manganese. These are then hydrometallurgically extracted. The large-scale plant needed for this will be built by BASF by the middle of the decade.

BASF sees an important future market in cathode materials for electric car batteries and is building a global manufacturing network – in Europe in Harjavalta, Finland, and Schwarzheide in Brandenburg. As raw materials can quickly become scarce in view of expected demand, the company is banking on the rapid development of a circular economy.

In XETRA trading, BASF shares are sometimes 0.60% higher at EUR 45.57.
