dott Interview with Christoph Specht: Diseases during the holidays and health in the summer
In the RTL interview, physician and medical journalist Dr. Christoph Specht also answered other interesting questions about vacation illnesses and summer time.
Why do you often get sick just in time for your vacation to start?
Have you ever experienced this? You are about to start your well-deserved vacation and suddenly you feel bad. “It’s a really weird phenomenon,” says Dr. Christopher Specht. But there is a good explanation for this. Why: Normally, stress causes the immune system to downregulate. However, this is different when a relaxation phase is imminent. In this case, you have a better immune system despite the stress, but it doesn’t last long. As Specht explains, this is how this increased immune defense subsides as soon as you let your soul dangle on vacation.
Can this phenomenon be prevented by taking vitamin supplements, for example?
“If I do, I must have done it a long time ago,” explains the expert in an interview. Vitamin D, for example, is a very important vitamin, among others. But the regulation of these values in the body is a long-term affair. “But what I can do is more on a psychological level,” Specht continues. At best, you should try to gradually reduce stress before going on vacation.
Do the sun and heat protect against disease or is it a myth?
Though one might think so, Specht says, “Incredibly not.” Sun exposure, like stress, is much more responsible for shutting down the immune system. A little sunshine, on the other hand, benefits the immune system. As with many things, the motto also applies to the sun: less is more.
How do strong temperature swings affect the body and what is the best way to behave?
“Especially when the temperature rise is strong, we have a problem,” says the expert in an interview. According to the doctor, when the humidity is high, it gets even worse: “Then it’s almost unbearable.” However, a good basic level in sport is a good basis for being able to cope better with such situations physically.
If not, Specht advises: “You should avoid turning up the air conditioning all the way.” It’s best if you don’t set the air conditioning too cold in the first place, or if you gradually get used to a warmer temperature before having to leave the air-conditioned car again, for example. And last but not least: “Always drink enough”. (vho)
