Service Never before have petrol and diesel prices at petrol stations in Germany risen as sharply as in March. When to expect relaxation and with which tips you can save.
Due to the Russian war against Ukraine, March 2022 was the most expensive fuel month ever. In just a few days, the price of gasoline jumped 37.6 cents in March and diesel even went up 56.5 cents in nine days. This is evidenced by a current analysis of fuel prices by ADAC.
At the end of the month, the tense price situation at German service stations eased again, but remained at high levels. A liter of Super E10 cost € 2,022 on March 31, diesel € 2,107.
Looking at the monthly average prices, the ADAC analysis shows an extreme upward leap. On 7 January, drivers had to pay an average of € 1,644 for a liter of Super E10. In two months the price of the Super has risen by almost 56 cents, for the Diesel it is even 76 cents more than on March 10 compared to January.
Although fuel prices fell again in early April, they are still unreasonably high, according to the ADAC. High crude oil prices can only partially explain price developments at service stations. While Brent crude oil briefly cost over $ 130 in March, the price dropped to $ 105 over the course of the month. Fuel prices, on the other hand, have not declined and have remained at high levels for weeks.
In this context, the ADAC expressly welcomes the latest initiative by the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs to strengthen the Fuel Market Transparency Unit at the Federal Cartel Office. Essentially, it’s about illuminating the processes involved in producing and wholesaling fuels from oil production to the pump. According to the ADAC, the intensified monitoring of market events by the Market Transparency Office can make an important contribution to the normalization of the price level.
Fuel price is lower on Tuesday
Motorists should continue to take advantage of opportunities to save money when refueling. The price of fuel often changes several times a week. Even within a day, the price of gasoline can vary up to 10 cents per liter. A regular comparison of gasoline prices can be helpful before filling up your tank.
The closer the weekend gets, the higher the prices will be. On Saturdays there is a lot of crowds at German petrol stations, but on Tuesdays or Wednesdays the petrol stations are relatively empty.
According to the statistics “When to fill up: the cheapest days of the week” from benzinpreis.de (as of April 21), Wednesday was by far the cheapest day to fill up in the past seven days, while Sunday was been the most expensive.
ADAC ratings show that gasoline and diesel are more expensive in the morning, but cheaper in the evening. According to the ADAC, the ideal time to refuel is between 6pm and 8pm. According to benzinpreise.de, drivers were able to save more around 9pm last week and fuel was more expensive at 7am.
The choice of service station also affects the price of fuel. Independent gas stations often cost a few cents less than chains like Aral or Shell.
