The production of electrified cars in Germany is down again

Automotive analyst Matthias Schmidt looked at the first quarter of 2022 in his current report. As this shows, the percentage of electrified vehicles remained below 20 percent. For the second consecutive month. According to his analysis, this is due to bottlenecks in the supply of cable harnesses in Ukraine, which is affecting the production chain of manufacturers.

For example, the Volkswagen Group had to shut down its multi-brand electric car production lines in Zwickau for a few days. According to Volkswagen, production was increased again from mid-April to between 950 and 1,050 units per day. According to the Financial Times, VW Group production of electric cars also had to be stopped in China because important parts could not be delivered. In the US and Europe, VW Group electric cars (VW, Audi, Porsche, Skoda, Seat) are currently “sold out”. The fault lies with missing chips and wiring that come from Ukraine, automotive analyst Schmidt also explained. In the first quarter of 2022, the VW Group only sold 99,000 electric cars worldwide. Tesla has delivered more than three times as many vehicles in the same period.

Schmidt takes a look at the figures, which could be found through information from the VDA and SAR. Over the past twelve months, 630,500 electric and plug-in hybrid cars have rolled off the assembly line. In relation to each other, they represent about 20.30 percent of the 3.1 million cars produced in the period March 2021 and February 2022. Just to look at the production figures in the first quarter of 2022.

The registration data in the first quarter of 2022 are still positive in terms of evolution. However, even here declining numbers can be expected if the current crises continue. What to hire. A total of 195,400 electrified vehicles have been registered since January, one percent more than in the same period last year. The VDA does not break down data into PHEVs and electric cars. Schmidt can provide the data until the end of March 2022.

In the first three months of the year 83,672 electric cars were registered in Germany, about 29.3% more than in the same period last year. In the case of plug-in hybrids, Germany recorded 67,771 registrations, which equates to a 13.2% drop in registrations. However, with 151,443 electrified vehicles by the end of March, it took first place in the ranking of electric and PHEV cars registered in Europe.
