Life is becoming more expensive: as a result of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the cost of energy and food has risen dramatically. The Federal Statistical Office determined that the inflation rate in April was 7.4 percent. In March it was 7.3 percent. In particular, low-wage sector employees are affected by price increases.

To give relief to its employees the discount chain Aldi has therefore increased the minimum wage for its employees from € 12.50 to € 14 per hour.

Aldi increases the minimum wage to 14 euros

“Everything is getting more expensive now, and of course Aldi Süd employees feel it too,” the discounter said in a press release. The northern subsidiary also joins. “All employees who, including all allowances, have earned less than 14 euros gross per hour will therefore receive more money”reads from a spokesperson for Aldi Nord.

The wage increase has been in effect since June and is well above the statutory minimum wage of € 10.45which will be introduced starting in July of this year.

More salary also for trainees

The aforementioned remuneration also applies to trainees. “From August, the salaries of all trainees will be increased by € 100: to € 1100 in the first year, € 1200 in the second year and € 1350 in the third year,” a spokesman for Aldi Süd said in a statement.

The discounter wants to “make training for young people more attractive”. Because compared to the study, this is becoming less and less important. This thesis is also supported by current data: according to the Federal Statistical Office, for the first time in 2020 more people have started university studies than vocational training.

British-style wage increase

Incidentally, Aldi is not the first company to adjust its wages to inflation. UK supermarket chain ‘Morrison’ is now paying its employees a minimum wage of £ 10 – previously £ 9.20. As a further measure, the group has also reduced the prices of more than 100 core products. The news portal “The Grocer” talked about it for the first time.

Learning Russian and getting to know the country and its people: until recently it was an attractive thought for many people. But since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, cooperation between Western countries and the Russian Federation has stopped in many areas.
