Supermarket customers must continue to adjust to price increases. As reported by the “Lebensmittel Zeitung (LZ)”, the discounter Aldi has already made further price adjustments in the last few days. These are mainly their dairy products. Other products are also affected.

“Supplier prices have been rising for months in almost all product groups, in some cases with clearly double-digit percentages.”

Other supermarket chains may soon follow suit

Dairy products, cereals, meat substitutes, beverages: The list of food items that Aldi Nord and Süd has made more expensive in recent days is long. Sometimes both Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have raised their prices, sometimes just one of the two retail brothers.

According to “LZ”, it usually doesn’t take long for the competition to follow suit. Customers must therefore also be prepared for product price increases in other supermarket chains. Lidl, Rewe and Penny usually react fairly quickly, Edeka and Netto usually take a few more days, according to the paper.

The fault lies with the prices of the suppliers

The “LZ” took a closer look at some products and found out Quark products and Icelandic dairy skyr experienced the largest percentage price increases. Quark with 40% fat and cream of quark with chocolate, for example, are said to have risen in price by almost 68%, from 59 to 99 cents.

The discount Aldi tells “LZ”: “Supplier prices have been rising for months in almost all product groups, in some cases with clearly double-digit percentages.” Therefore, the trade must raise prices. He goes on to say: “Our margins will not increase due to price adjustments – indeed: we are looking very carefully where there are additional efficiency benefits to offer our customers price advantages.” However, Aldi was unable to avoid further price increases.

Branded products have also gotten more expensive

But not only the proprietary brands shock with the new higher prices. Customers also need to spend more on branded products. The prices for these have already been raised before. Here too mainly affected: dairy products. The Monte-Maxi by Zott, for example, costs € 2.49 instead of € 1.99, and the dwarf fruits have been increased from € 1.59 to € 1.79.

It is also clear that discounter Lidl dares to raise prices independently of Aldi. For example, Lidl has set the price of Pepsi in a 1.5-liter bottle at 1.19 euros. Aldi Nord remained at 99 cents. It is usually Aldi who sets the prices.
