The change becomes more concrete: Bensebaini at the BVB would be the door opener of Gladbach

In recent transfer periods there have been rumors of clubs that would like to sign Ramy Bensebaini. Now it is taking shape between the Algerian and the BVB. Because the whole constellation would make sense, especially for Gladbach.

The voice
Specifically, the topic appeared for the first time three weeks ago: “Foot Mercato”, the French version of the portal “fussballtransfers.com”, reported that Borussia Dortmund had increased interest in the signing of Ramy Bensebaini . Contacts with Gladbach’s left-back have already been made and Bensebaini himself is aiming for a change in the summer. At that time there was still talk of a transfer fee of € 20 million, but it was too high. Now the “Sport Bild” reports an impending change for a fee of twelve million. The Algerian cost nine three years ago.

Dying the situation
The BVB want to get rid of Nico Schulz and usually use Raphael Guerreiro in the left rear, who should now go too. Sports director Sebastian Kehl, who for the first time is in charge of planning the squad for a season, is almost hoping that a guy like Bensebaini is on his shopping list. In Dortmund there would be a reunion with Marco Rose, with whom Bensebaini made his Bundesliga debut in 2019 after moving from Stade Rennes. However, Gladbach had kept him on the radar for a long time.

The fact that Bensebaini’s current contract expires in a year makes him a candidate for sale automatically. While coach Roland Virkus pointed out in an interview with “Kicker” that he definitely wants to stretch goalkeeper Yann Sommer and Jonas Hofmann and doesn’t necessarily want to give up on strikers Marcus Thuram, Alassane Plea and Breel Embolo, there is no announcement of the genre regarding Bensebaini. Without making a name, Virkus even proclaims: “One has a wish that wants to leave.”

Apart from Florian Neuhaus, only Bensebaini was questioned in this context. If he is healthy and ready for action, he always plays under the guidance of coach Adi Hütter. However, Virkus’ predecessor Max Eberl signed a possible successor to Luca Netz last summer and Bensebaini’s performance has fluctuated considerably for some time.

The evaluation of the RP journalist
“Foot Market” had to be treated with caution as a source because the dispersion is wide. In this case, however, the portal has outlined a scenario that is far from improbable. The “Sport Bild” report is now even more specific, in other words: there is a high probability that Bensebaini will go to BVB.

Many Gladbach fans immediately recalled the following promise when they heard news like this: “If Marco Rose says he won’t bring any players to Borussia Dortmund, then he won’t bring any players to Borussia Dortmund. Done, done.” However, Rose’s oath of waiver from February 2021 only applied to the next transfer period.

Dortmund’s efforts for Bensebaini fit into the transfer strategy of the runner-up designate, who prefers to use slightly lower clubs in the Bundesliga food chain. Nico Schlotterbeck from Freiburg was signed on Monday for central defense, and if Schulz and Guerreiro leave, he who knows if Hoffenheim’s new international David Raum might be of interest.

Gladbach, on the other hand, has taken precautions with the transfer to the net, and shooting star Joe Scally can play sideways as well. In Hannes Wolf there is also a surprising alternative, as the Austrian often holds the position of left-sided player in Swansea City. Although Bensebaini has often helped in the last three this season, Borussia should make up for this missing reserve option elsewhere.

If he’s fit and focused, Bensebaini is one of the best in the Bundesliga in his position. But for the impending upheaval, the proceeds of the transfer must be reached urgently. Even a fee of twelve million euros would be a welcome door opener for one’s activities. Gladbach cannot afford to wait until the time of preparation.

After Marco Reus (2012), Mo Dahoud (2017) and Thorgan Hazard (2019), it would certainly not be desirable to lose another top player to a competitor, at least for a while. However, it is not to be despised how profitable Gladbach was able to make with the 60 million euros that BVB has transferred over the past decade.
