BVB is almost certainly the runner-up. Despite this, Dortmund’s season looks like a failure. One area in particular presents the coaching team with important tasks.
Instead of cheering for a safe second place in “little Revierderby”, the BVB match against Bochum ended with the boos of their own fans. 3: 4 was on the scoreboard at the end. A bitter home defeat with (once again) too many goals conceded.
Disillusionment with defensive problems is great. BVB have already conceded 50 goals, the most since the 2007/2008 season. Despite two exceptional matches, the value at the time (62) will probably not decrease.
For Rose it’s 75
For coach Marco Rose the problem drags on even further. Since his transfer from Mönchengladbach to Dortmund became known, he has also conceded 75 goals in 45 Bundesliga games. A rate of 1.67 goals conceded per game. The 45-year-old urgently needs to keep this issue under control, otherwise he will be uncomfortable in Dortmund next season.
Rose himself clearly focused on this topic after the defeat against Bochum: “When I look at the table and I see 50 goals conceded as second in the table, then it is relatively clear what the central problem is.”
The reasons for this are different. On the one hand, the many goals conceded are often due to poor individual and team defensive behavior. On the other hand, the workforce here is often too small. BVB needs more consistency on the defensive. New arrivals are key. Niklas Süle is already in place, Nico Schlotterbeck should also come to the center. And right-back fans would also like to see reinforcements, although Mateu Morey should be fit again for the new season.
A small ray of hope in defense is our local Tom Rothe, who at 17 has already played two Bundesliga games. The young left-back could also play a role in the future, although Raphael Guerreiro is in the lead for now.
