Not pure relaxation – when vacation makes you sick • HealthNews

Mallorca, Sardinia, Ibiza or better Bali? The agony of choosing where to go for your next vacation. The destination isn’t that important, but what really matters is that it’s the best vacation ever. You need good flights, maximum relaxation, perfect temperatures, good value for money, etc. In short: the holiday must compensate what it accumulates in a year; that is, all the stress, all the tension, the many hours of work and the consequent exhaustion. But then many people get sick while on vacation of all things: is it just bad luck and individual coincidence or is there a social reason why, for example, a cold then hits all time?

Leisure time sickness or the so-called leisure time sickness

The phenomenon of getting sick when you are finally on vacation is called leisure time sickness. Research shows that there can be a number of reasons for this, but stress is the root of them all. Some employees feel guilty about unfinished work and can’t pull the plug. Others only notice on vacation, when the stress of everyday life is less, that you feel really bad. Still others want to have the perfect vacation and therefore get stressed out more with planning than it is good for them. In situations of increased stress, the bronchi in the body expand so that they can absorb more oxygen. This changes your breathing and your heart beats faster and faster. If a person is repeatedly exposed to such stressful situations over a longer period of time, the following effects can occur:

  • palpitations or rapid heartbeat
  • sweats
  • Feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or faint
  • Hot flashes or chills
  • Shortness of breath, feelings of choking or shortness of breath
  • Sense of tightness in the throat or chest
  • nausea or abdominal pain

Having these symptoms over a long period of time can lead to diseases like tinnitus, burn-out, diabetes, etc.
The increased risk of getting sick on vacation is also known as the “open window effect”. On vacation, the high level of adrenaline, triggered by constant stress, drops and the immune system recovers. As a result, the body is more susceptible to viruses and bacteria. This phenomenon is evident not only in individuals, but in our society. Pressure at work and constant confrontation with stress are deeply rooted in capitalism.

Enjoy the holiday

Of course, a vacation doesn’t automatically mean you get sick. However, there are some tips on how to take precautions to start your free time in shape.

  • Reduces Stress: reduce stress early and reduce exertion through lots of exercise and the conscious enjoyment of free time
  • Lists of things to do: Lists can always help you get an overview of what you really need to do before the holidays
  • pay attention to hygiene measures: If Corona has taught us anything, it is this: wash your hands, keep your distance, wear masks if necessary
  • unfinished business: Don’t be afraid of unfinished business. Most activities can be done just as easily after the holidays
  • Relaxation: even in everyday life you should relax again and again. It’s best to take short breaks from time to time

In any case, stress should always be avoided in everyday life. There are also a variety of methods that help reduce daily stress. It is advisable to sunbathe all year round and make the most of your free time.
