New registrations of electric cars May 2022 | ENGINE AND CAR SPORT

Electric cars can still grow in May. VW is at the forefront. However, another German brand clarified the top spot.

After a sharp decline in April, electric cars are back in the fast lane in May 2022. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) registered 29,182 new registrations of battery electric cars in May 2022, which means a market share of 14 , 1 percent ahead of total registrations of 207,199 units. Compared to May 2021, BEVs increased by 8.9%, while the overall passenger car market in Germany collapsed by 10.2%.

Market share has almost returned to the level of the previous record month of March. And this practically completely without Tesla. Because the Grünheide Gigafactory is currently not producing quantities, while the lockdown in Shanghai and the crown-related drop in production at the Gigafactory are causing a drop in delivery numbers. In Shanghai, Tesla had practically put factory workers in barracks since April in order to continue production despite Chinese blockade measures. Workers can leave the factory on “leave at home” for the first time only in mid-June. Despite these strict measures, production had significantly decreased.

With the 112 Model Y and 181 Model 3, Tesla again remained far below the record figures of March to May. Others are in the running: With a total of 4,328 Up, ID.3 and ID.4 / 5 first registered in May, VW is the brand with the most new electronic registrations. This means three VWs in the top 10 of new electronic registrations, but only one model on the podium: the ID.4 / 5 comes in second place. Another German brand takes first place: Opel is exactly 40 units ahead of the VW ID.4 with Corsa E and thus occupies first place in the Stromer registration table for the first time.

Similar to those of the entire passenger car market, the registration data for electric cars only partially reflect the favor of buyers. Instead, especially in the first part of the new registration table, it is almost exclusively the manufacturer’s delivery capacity that decides where a model ends up. In May, in particular, German marks did quite well. VW has the most new electronic registrations ever, but the Opel Corsa E takes the top spot with a small lead.
