Musk talks to employees and threatens layoffs

Elon Musk spoke to Twitter staff for the first time since his acquisition announcement. During the question and answer session, he reflected on the existence of extraterrestrials and hinted at job cuts in the company.

Elon Musk is raising the bar for Twitter. At the first question and answer session with employees of the US abbreviated messaging service, on Thursday the Tesla boss announced his goal of increasing the number of users to at least one billion. Twitter currently has 229 million.

At the same time, Musk, who announced the $ 44 billion acquisition of Twitter in April, wants to manage growth with fewer employees. According to him, job cuts are needed, the richest man in the world according to Forbes said in a videoconference. Just like an austerity plan: “Right now the costs are exceeding the revenues.” But anyone relevant to the company has nothing to fear. At the end of last year, Twitter had 7,500 employees. Facebook comes in at 45,000 for comparison.

It was the first time Musk has answered questions from the Twitter workforce. He arrived ten minutes late for the videoconference and reflected on the existence of extraterrestrials. Twitter is supposed to help “civilization and awareness,” said Musk, who otherwise gave little details on the acquisition, which has made many headlines recently.
