Musk reveals acquisition plans to Twitter employees

T.Billionaire Elon Musk is also reportedly involved in product development of the service after a Twitter acquisition. In a video conference with Twitter employees, Musk said he assumed employees would listen to his suggestions for features. Among the product ideas Musk mentioned Thursday was, for example, withdrawing money for today’s free user verification. He also confirmed his intention to combat automated bot accounts.

Musk recounted how he once bought a shoddy product based on an advertisement for it on the YouTube video sharing platform and did a web search and found that it was a scam. He wants to prevent something like this on Twitter.

Also allow “outrageous” tweets.

The Tesla boss reiterated his position that the spread of radical positions should also be allowed on Twitter. He himself holds moderate political positions, Musk said accordingly. At the same time, he reiterated that users should be allowed to post “rather outrageous” things, but Twitter can restrict the distribution of such tweets. He acknowledged that users could leave Twitter if they are attacked or feel uncomfortable on the platform.

Musk had previously announced that he would lift the ban on former US President Donald Trump as the owner of Twitter. His criticism of Twitter restricting free speech too much also raised concerns that more misinformation or insults could remain on the platform under his direction.

It aims at “at least one billion people on Twitter,” Musk said. He raised the bar: Twitter currently has around 230 million daily active users to whom the service can show advertisements because they use the internal app or web version. In a possible hint of the future direction, Musk praised the Chinese video app Tiktok for finding fun clips for users.

Statements immediately pierced

While Thursday’s conversation with Musk was meant for staff only, Twitter officials shared the information so freely that several major US media outlets were able to post it on liveblog.

Musk prepared Twitter’s workforce for possible job cuts. Twitter is expected to be financially sound, and right now its costs are higher than its revenues, he pointed out. However, those who make a significant contribution have nothing to fear. According to Musk, even valuable employees are more likely to be able to continue working from home. The online service previously promised employees that they would not be forced to return to offices even after the pandemic ended. But Musk only recently prescribed a general presence requirement for the companies he manages: electric car maker Tesla and space company SpaceX.

Acquisition still questionable

It is also unclear whether Musk will eventually become the owner of Twitter. Although he has accepted an acquisition with Twitter’s board of directors, it depends on the approval of a majority of shareholders. At the same time, he declared the deal suspended because he doubted the number of fake accounts. Twitter retorted that Musk couldn’t unilaterally suspend the deal and was determined to enforce it.

While Musk is offering shareholders $ 54.20 per share, the stock closed Thursday at $ 37.36, down about 1.7%. So Musk has an incentive to renegotiate the price, while many previous shareholders have an interest in selling his current offering. The appearance in front of employees was taken as a sign that Musk is still fundamentally interested in buying Twitter. He did not directly comment on this in the conversation.
