With the new version 7.0, Mattermost updates its chat and collaboration platform. The focus of the update was in particular on the features requested by users: among other things, the program has a new view of the threads for the answers, which can be collapsed to provide an overview. Administrators can enable the feature by default for all users if they wish.
Different instances for apps
Additionally, apps for iOS and Android can now be linked to multiple Mattermost instances. However, this is still a beta feature that users who want to test it must explicitly activate. With desktop apps and clients, voice calls can also be made in channels in the future, where screen content can also be shared with other participants. Chat and other Mattermost features are available in parallel in the background. Officially, this functionality is still in a beta stage – cloud customers should receive it automatically, administrators of an on-premises instance must manually configure it.
Additionally, developers are expanding the chat text input with new buttons for message formatting. It is aimed at users who cannot or do not want to write Markdown – the program converts it to the correct syntax. A click on the preview finally shows the message as it will appear in the channel.
Additional updates are available for the playbooks, which are checklists for automating workflows. Now users can also edit them in the panoramic view and retrieve statistics on the actual use of the playbooks. Mattermost is also introducing new settings for actions and triggers – they should allow for a more detailed configuration of which people the software should inform when and which WebHooks should activate when.
MacOS and Linux ready packages
Finally, there is also a change in the interface, a panel on the right side of the application groups extensions and apps in the future. Desktop client installation should also be easier for system administrators: on the one hand, the program is now available in the macOS App Store, including automatic updates via it, and the DEB and RPM packages are now available under Linux .
All information about the update can be found in the project blog. Mattermost is open source software that can also be run on its own. As an option, the developers offer a project-managed cloud variant – it’s free in a small installation, fees are due for many important business and support functions.
