Letter to the editor: Combinations of diseases play a significant role

June 20, 2022 – This rather confirms that Corona is judged by the same criteria as any other serious infectious disease in an epidemic. So precisely according to their special characteristics, just like any other disease, even if it is different.

The pollen allergy assessment shows exactly this: Pollen allergy sufferers have been shown to be more at risk of contracting corona if they have hay fever symptoms. And because hay fever symptoms are similar to an omicron variant infection, corona infection can go unnoticed until it’s too late. This is why hay fever patients often get tested daily for Corona, which in itself becomes expensive for private health insurance (PKV) at the latest when tests are no longer free.

But these are criteria that are also used for any other disease. Nobody said Corona would be treated like a trivial disease. Rather, Corona is judged against standards that are in principle also used for other diseases.

There is always a close look at the cost risk for private health insurance. And it is precisely the combinations of diseases that in themselves would not be considered risky that play a significant role in accurate risk assessment. For example, when the combined risk premium is far greater than the sum of individual disease risk premiums, or the combination alone leads to rejection.
