It can, says the TÜV

The Wolfsburg can score particularly for the environment and the quality of processing. In addition to the much sought after five-door model, there is also a three-door version and the “Variant” station wagon variant with a length of 4.56 meters. This can accommodate objects up to 2.70 meters long, the maximum trunk volume is 1,620 liters.

engines and propulsion

The range of engines is huge, from very reasonable to very sporty, everything is included. There is a choice of petrol and diesel engines, a natural gas model and an electric model as well as a plug-in hybrid (GTE).

  • The internal combustion engines are all turbocharged with three or four cylinders. The displacement varies from one to two liters, the power range from 85 to 310 hp in the Golf R. Depending on the engine, a five- or six-speed manual transmission or a six- or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission requires transmission care of power.
  • The methane version (TGI, 2013-2018) uses the 1.4-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 110 hp. On average it consumes 3.5 kilograms of natural gas.
  • The plug-in hybrid GTE has been available since 2014. It has a system output of 204 hp and an electric range of up to 50 kilometers.
  • The electric Golf with a 24.2 kWh battery has also been offered since 2014. The e-Golf delivers 115 hp and the first edition had a range of up to 190 kilometers (NEDC). It received an update with the restyling: the 35.8 kWh battery is enough for 231 kilometers (WLTP).
  • Two abbreviations inspire the enthusiasm of many golf enthusiasts: GTI and GTD. The GTI initially had 220 hp, since 2017 it has been 230 hp. The GTD diesel counterpart with its 184 hp is a little less lively, but at the petrol station with an average of 4.5 liters more thrifty than the GTI with an average of 6.5 liters Super.

equipment and safety

Classically, the Golf was offered in the “Trendline”, “Comfortline” and “Highline” equipment lines. Air conditioning and a 5-inch touchscreen were standard. From the second level of comfort aluminum rims were mounted, “Highline” invented bi-xenon headlights, among other things. There were also many special models such as Cup, Allstar or Sound. Numerous assistants and security techniques were available. These include elements such as the emergency brake assist, lane departure warning system, high beam assistant and adaptive cruise control. Many of these were not only offered individually, but as a package with a price advantage. Extras like adaptive dampers are not a matter of course in the compact class. And speaking of safety: the 2012 Golf achieved a five-star rating in the NCAP crash test.

In the main inspection of the TÜV (HU), the Wolfsburg mostly hits well. Despite the higher mileage than the average of the tested vehicles, the defect rate is below average. However, the Golf does not come through the HU completely flawless. TÜV inspectors criticize the springs and shock absorbers of the first HU. The steering system and brake discs are also subject to criticism.

For the older models it is necessary to invest around 6,500 euros. The models ordered for restyling are currently well over 10,000 euros.

You can’t go wrong with the VW Golf 7. As usual, its design is classless, space and ergonomics are just right. The range of engines appeals to many interests and is suitable for various purposes.
