- Hertha gets some air in the relegation battle.
- A home win against VfB Stuttgart gives the Berliners valuable points.
- However, neither team offered a great game.
Hertha BSC took a big step towards staying in the league when Felix Magath celebrated his 500th anniversary as a Bundesliga manager. The Berliners prevailed in a 2-0 (1-0) duel against VfB Stuttgart rivals on Sunday evening and increased their lead to 15th table. to four points the Swabians, who are one rank below.
With his first goal under Jubilar Magath in front of 54,589 spectators, Davie Selke (4th minute) put Hertha ahead in succession against a direct relegation contender. Ishak Belfodil (90th + 3rd) made Berlin’s second win against a rival for relegation perfect.
Even more team spirit at Hertha
This game could not offer football fun due to the precarious situation of both teams. Like the previous week, in the 1-0 victory over FC Augsburg, the Berliners impressed with a long-lacking team spirit and a great deal of commitment.
With another success next Saturday at Arminia in Bielefeld, which is six points away, the Bundesliga could be made perfect if VfB Stuttgart also lose to VfL Wolfsburg at the same time. The Swabians are only two points clear of the East Westphalians in relegation 16 and still need to improve in the last spurt of the season.
First celebrations on the Berlin side
The smoke from the fireworks in the Stuttgart fan block had not yet cleared when the Hertha took to the skies. Marc Oliver Kempf (3rd), who only moved from Stuttgart to Berlin in the winter, had a chance to hit his head. Selke almost got the ball. Shortly thereafter, the striker was right when Magath’s assist expert Marvin Plattenhardt crossed paths. Referee Felix Brych complained of an offside position, but the video images were clear. The goal is counted and Selke and the Hertha fans were free to celebrate after the confirmation of the VAR.
This time around there was no sign of the great dissonance between the Berlin team and the critical fans. Hertha has satisfied the wishes of the fans. The fight was fair. Stuttgart has invented very little. When full-back Pascal Stenzel was injured, VfB manager Pellegrino Matarazzo used the necessary substitution to change tactics. Erik Tommy and Borna Sosa continued to advance as offensive rail players. On the back it was secured with a chain of three.
Hertha’s second goal in injury time
The static of the game hasn’t changed. Hertha goalkeeper Marcel Lotka didn’t have to thwart a serious opportunity in Stuttgart. The Berliners were safe, but they were unable to set decisive accents in an offensive way. Vladimir Darida (35th), who replaced Marco Richter, suspended, was well played by Selke, but did not finish. Lucas Tousart (45 + 2) only hits the side net.
In his 500th match as a Bundesliga manager, Magath was able to sit on the bench in his linen suit in the second half. His assistant Mark Fotheringham took on the coach – with a lot of enthusiasm. As his boss, the Scotsman then saw a much braver VfB team. Konstantinos Mavropanos (48th) and Chris Führich (57th) arrived dangerously in front of Hertha’s goal. The Berliners survived this difficult phase and have successfully resisted the draw ever since. Substitute Belfodil clarified everything in injury time. (best / dpa)
FC Bayern celebrate another German championship after beating Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in the top game. After two years of Corona abstinence, the party is definitely more exuberant than in previous years. And the wheat beer shower also celebrates a comeback. The best photos.
