Giro d’Italia live in the ticker – 4th stage up to Etna: first showdown with Rosa while dancing on the volcano

After three days in Hungary, the Giro d’Italia returns to its homeland. And this year’s first stop on Italian soil has it all. The fourth section begins in Avola and ends at Etna. It is the first difficult mountain arrival this year.

Thus, on the fourth day, the favorites for the general classification compete against each other. You can’t win the Giro today, but if you have sick legs, you can definitely lose it.

After the start in Hungary, Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) leads the overall standings ahead of Briton Simon Yates (+0: 11) and compatriot Tom Dumoulin (+0: 16), winner of the 2017 Giro. The best German is Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-hansgrohe) in 45th place (+1: 08).

14:49 – Live lap – 79 kilometers to go

There are still 79 kilometers to go to the leading group. The outliers are currently on the one section that is longer and flatter. But even here there is always a bit of ups and downs. The advantage over the group is about 7:35 minutes.

14:40 – Virtual Vansevenant in Pink

The best placed driver of the leading group of all is Mauri Vansevenant (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team). The Belgian is 20th, 43 seconds behind Van der Poel. So Vansevenant is currently wearing the pink jersey. Second in the group was the Italian Valerio Conti (+0: 47). Lennard Kämna is 1:55 minutes behind van der Poel in the overall standings.

The group gained ground and reduced the gap to the fugitives by two minutes. Meanwhile, there is a fall at the end of the field. Luca Rastelli (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè) falls and causes some chaos. But the Italian immediately returned to the saddle.

14:10 – Live tour – fight for the mountain jersey

Of course, today’s final on Etna is not just about the pink jersey, but obviously also the blue mountain jersey. This is currently still on the shoulders of Rick Zabel, who secured the jersey in the Budapest individual time trial with the best time on the castle climb and successfully defended it in the 3rd stage. Pascal Eekhoff has achieved it in terms of points (both 5 points), but as the German is better classified in the general classification, today he is allowed to roll in blue towards Etna. However, the adventure in blue will also end here. As is known, Zabel is not a climber and therefore will be left behind on Etna. Today’s winner should be the new wearer of the mountain jersey. On Etna 40 mountain points are awarded.

14:00 – Bahrain Victorious and Ineos lead the pack

Today, of course, everything is concentrated on the arrival of Etna in the mountains. But first, there are still two sprint classifications on the program: in Paternò 33.3 kilometers from the finish and in Biancavilla 23.4 kilometers from the finish. The final climb begins immediately afterwards.

The group again gave the leading group a greater advantage. Kämna and Co. are now about 10:20 minutes ahead of the group.

13:31 Uhr – Miguel Ángel López gibt auf!

The advantage of the fugitives is already over four minutes. Behind them Lilian Calmejane (AG2R Citroën Team) chases the group. She’s only ten seconds away, can she still catch up?

13:00 – Van der Poel has resumed

Mathieu van der Poel was again captured by the group. The main group around Lennard Kämna still exists. But their advantage is not yet great.

12:57 – Ticker Giro – Van der Poel attacked!

Now the man in pink attacks. Mathieu van der Poel tries to fill the group on the run. The Dutchman is a strong and versatile cyclist, but not a climbing goat. If he wants to defend the pink jersey today, then he must start the final climb with an advantage over Simon Yates and his teammates. A clever move by the 27-year-old.

12:53 – Kämna in the lead
