Dusseldorf Ford will stop producing cars at the Saarlouis plant in three years. This was confirmed on Wednesday by the European branch of the US carmaker. In Ford’s internal competition for future electric car production, the Saarland factory lost to Valencia in Spain. Saarlouis will continue to produce the current Focus model until around mid-2025.

“Valencia offers better prospects for the future, especially from a financial point of view,” said Stuart Rowley, Ford’s European head, in an interview with Handelsblatt. The car plant in Spain performed better in terms of material costs and supplier base. The same goes for the wage level, which is lower in Valencia than in Saarlouis.

For the foreseeable future, Ford will only produce cars at two European locations, which will then be powered exclusively by electricity. Cologne had already received approval for two electric models in the spring. At Ford’s German headquarters, production of purely battery electric vehicles will begin next year.
