Both clubs confirmed on Thursday evening that the previous loan has been converted into a permanent transfer. Coutinho has signed a four-year contract with Villa, Barça says it will receive a transfer fee of 20 million euros and has also included a clause in the agreement that 50 percent of the transfer fee goes to Catalonia if the player is bought.

However, it’s unclear whether this will pay off financially, why Coutinho will be 30 in a month’s time, and why he feels very comfortable in Birmingham. Since he arrived in January, the Brazilian has emerged as a key attacking player under the guidance of manager Steven Gerrard. In 16 league appearances he has collected four goals and three assists.

Gerrard enthusiastic: “Brilliant transfer”

“This is a brilliant transfer for Aston Villa,” Gerrard said in a statement from the 12th Premier League. “Phil is a model professional. Since he arrived in January, his impact on the team has been very clear.” Furthermore, the former Liverpool player is a “valuable role model” for young players.

Coutinho’s career had previously stalled at Barcelona. He has never really been able to meet the high expectations associated with his € 140 million commitment at the start of 2018 in La Liga.
