By pressing the start button at the latest, the black disc, which extends to the center console region, turns into a colorful infotainment center where the driver and front passenger can call up all the information they need. You must first get used to navigating the menus, after a few handles you have control over the most important functions such as driving assistance and navigation and you can bring the surface of the smartphone you are carrying inside the vehicle via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
He will take it with him
A lot of space. The sport tourer is a main charger with 1,634 liters of trunk, the “solo” hybrid can hold up to 1,553 liters. There are also many high-tech features, including fully adaptive LED headlights, which, however, depend on the equipment line and cannot be ordered as extras. There are also things like a head-up display, all-round camera, traffic sign recognition, and voice control that accepts free speech. On the other hand, the wide choice of different seat designs, in the luxury version also with massage function for the front passengers, is not at all obvious in this class, albeit associated with at least 1,310 euros more.
That’s how it drives
The Astra Sportstourer offers a colorful variety of units. For the first contact with the compact station wagon, Opel has brought almost all engines with it, except for the electric variant that will follow next year.
- We then start with the 130 hp petrol engine (a 110 hp variant is also available), available both with an automatic gearbox and as a switch. In keeping with the idea of downsizing, it functions as a supercharged three-cylinder version with a reduced displacement of 1.2 liters. Not that the little engine is noisy, but it reveals itself through its hum, which is characteristic of the number of cylinders. Whether it’s a smooth eight-speed converter or a smooth six-speed gearbox, the power plant (230 Newton meters from a low 1,750 rpm) pulls the 1.4 tons with sufficient force.
- The same goes for the 130 HP diesel, for which the price list also includes automatic and manual gearboxes. It is questionable whether diesel, which today is equipped with complex exhaust gas cleaning systems, still makes sense in light of the ever-increasing use of electromobility, including in terms of operating costs. But especially long distance users will be happy. Because even in 2022, traveling a thousand kilometers at once will only work with a diesel engine.
- By contrast, the plug-in hybrid clearly proved to be a moody drive over the course of this test series. The dual 130hp engine (also available: 225hp) drives fast, reaches country road speed after 7.7 seconds and loses no other significant momentum. Thanks to a battery capacity of around twelve kWh, the plug-in is well averaged for 60 kilometers of purely electric driving and can cover up to 72 kilometers in city traffic without using the petrol engine.
The combined WLTP consumption of the petrol variants stands at just under six liters, while the diesel consumes an average of around four and a half liters per 100 kilometers.

The Opel Astra Sportstourer is available from 27,750 euros as a petrol engine, as a diesel from 32,150 euros and as a plug-in hybrid for 39,750 euros. The first copies will be delivered in the autumn.
Since the early 1990s, the Astra has been in a duel with the VW Golf blockbuster. The current generation is also available as a variant priced from 29,900 euros with 110 hp. The Ford Focus Tournament, which was recently revamped like the Kia Ceed SW, costs from 23,650 euros. The Kia costs from 21,190 euros with a 100hp petrol engine.
