BVB: Sebastian Kehl is vague about Marco Rose’s future – what is Edin Terzic actually doing?

The job of a football official is sometimes complicated. Dortmund’s designated sporting director Sebastian Kehl also had to realize this over the weekend when the media promptly flew slightly vague statements about his manager Marco Rose’s future around his ears.

Before Saturday’s 3: 1 to relegated SpVgg Greuther Fürth, the 42-year-old had aroused irritation when, when asked if Rose would still be manager next season, he replied twice on “Sky”: “I suppose that’s the case today.” he replied.

A statement that left a lot of room for interpretation. It is therefore not surprising that the journalists present at the Ronhof in Fürth compared Rose with the statements of her superior.

Also, it’s not surprising that the 45-year-old downplayed them. “What can I say about it? You’re trying to conjure something from something,” replied the manager, referring to the absolutely reliable relationship between him and the management.

He is certain that he will be “the coach of Borussia Dortmund next year” and “he can’t wait to do it because I have a very good relationship with my team and I would like to bring out some things”.

But is the manager’s future in Dortmund really secure?

Kehl retraces his steps: “Unfortunately formulated”

The thing is, Kehl has already rowed on Sunday. “Without great intention” he “put it so totally miserable”, the former BVB captain put on the record, but also noted that “now we sit down after the season”. “We have some things to discuss, certainly also analyze some critical things. So I hope we can tackle it together in the new season.”

Kehl knows what will be done with his statements, but he can clearly say that he is planning next season with Rose.

A clear statement with no room for interpretation sounds different.

Rose’s debut season: mixed to the max

The fact that Roses’ future could become a problem is due to the debut season at best sufficient by the coach who passed from Gladbach to Dortmund. Admittedly, Rose only had to admit defeat in the league, league champion FC Bayern, who received the league trophy for the tenth time in a row on Sunday, so that’s no shame. However, the disappointing performance in three cup competitions weighs much more.

In the DFB Cup, the last door was wide open after FC Bayern lost to Borussia Mönchengladbach (0: 5) in the second round. But instead of taking advantage of Monaco’s misstep, the Giallorossi retired only one round later, in the round of 16, against second division FC St. Pauli.

The Champions League group stage was just as bitter. With Besiktas, Ajax Amsterdam and Sporting, BVB had indeed been given doable tasks, but after three wins and three losses they were relegated to the Europa League.

But instead of starting there as one of the big favorites, they lost incredibly weak against the current Glasgow Rangers finalists. By that point at the latest, the season had suffered permanent damage.

Rose and BVB: It’s all about sporting success

“I think in football it happens relatively quickly, if you lose two games, you actually walk away again,” said Rose on Saturday and assured she saw the hustle and bustle of her “relatively relaxed” persona despite it all.

He knows there are people who say he may not be the right coach. “But there are also many people who say that the path and circumstances have been difficult this season,” defended the Leipzig native, referring to the serious injury problems that have plagued Dortmund several times over the course of the season.

Indeed, Rose’s debut season in the traditional Westphalian club was not an easy one. But despite all the adversities, his future at BVB naturally depends solely on sporting success.

What does Edin Terzic actually do?

His predecessor Edin Terzic, who led Borussia into the premier class with a resounding final sprint as an interim solution after the expulsion of Lucien Favre and then won the DFB Cup in the final against RB Leipzig.

Terzic, who has also been a fervent supporter of the Giallorossi since childhood, still enjoys an excellent reputation in the fan scene and at the management level for these short but also intense months as a manager.

In order not to lose the 39-year-old after Rose’s commitment, already certain before Terzic’s resounding success, the BVB quickly created a new position. Terzic is involved in the planning of the Dortmund squad and occupies the liaison between the licensed players department and the youth sector.

Since then, his name has hovered over Rose as the much-quoted sword of Damocles. “In my opinion, the fact that Terzic remained in the club undermined the manager’s authority from day one,” Dietmar Hamann criticized in his “Sky” column in late November immediately after leaving the premier class.

And again: “The fact that Terzic remained seemed to me as if they said: ‘Well, we’ll keep him if something happens'”.

A lot has happened in the year of Rose’s premiere: a lot of good things, but also a lot of bad things. The fact that now the coach has to publicly interpret the statements of his superior about his future on TV on the penultimate matchday of the season is at least unpleasant and could indicate more serious problems.

The talks announced by Kehl in the summer will show which path the club and the manager will take now.

Everything seems possible.
