updated preliminary decision! The fight against relegation from the Bundesliga remains exciting. Two late goals in Arminia Bielefeld’s 1-1 draw against Hertha BSC and VfB Stuttgart’s 1-1 draw against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday prevented conditions from improving two games before the end of the season.

Bielefeld (27 points) has the worst conditions behind Stuttgart (29) on relegation place and Berliners (33) in 15th place.

FC Bayern lose in Mainz and BVB to Bochum

The FC Bayern champion lost 3-1 at FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday, while second-placed Borussia Dortmund suffered a 3-4 defeat to VfL Bochum despite three goals from Erling Haaland. FC Augsburg are still in contention for the European Cup.

In Bielefeld the fans saw a first half with few twists and only a few shots in the direction of the goal. At the start, the visitors from Berlin were slightly superior, but in the 21st game of the season they did not score in the first 45 minutes. In Arminia it was even the 23rd game. Lucas Tousart made Hertha fans cheer after a corner in the 54th minute. Joakim Nilsson (90. +1 minute) prevented the Berlin party.

The situation worsens for VfB after John Anthony Brooks (13th) scored 0: 1 with a header from a corner. Stuttgart then had a very difficult moment and could hardly create chances. Then Chris Führich (89th) scored.

Haaland hat-trick against Bochum

The Bayern champion conceded Jonathan Burkardt’s first goal in the 18th minute. Mainz had already hit the crossbar twice and were clearly the better side in the early stages – Moussa Niakhaté (27th) reinforced his superiority with his goal. World footballer Robert Lewandowski (33rd) scored the goal, but Leandro Barreiro (57th) scored again for Mainz.

BVB lagged behind early goals from Sebastian Polter (3rd) and Gerrit Holtmann (8th). Two penalties converted by Haaland (18th and 30th) brought Dortmund back into play before the Norwegian also scored his third BVB goal in the 62nd minute. But Jürgen Locadia (81 minutes) and Miloš Pantović (85 minutes, penalty) turned the situation around again.

Jan Thielmann (12th) led Cologne in the lead in Augusta, Mark Uth (15th) soon followed after a model from Thielmann. Anthony Modeste (63rd) then converted a penalty into his 18th goal of the season and also scored in the 77th minute. Florian Niederlechner (73rd) had meanwhile shortened. With 52 points, FC are sixth in the standings. (dpa / msc)
