VfB Stuttgart, threatened with relegation, earned a well-deserved draw in Bundesliga Bayern Munich before delivering the championship trophy. This means that the VfB is essentially sure of the 16th seat for relegation.
On Sunday (8 May 2022) the champions Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart split 2-2 (2-1). Tiago Tomás put the visitors ahead at the start of the day 33 (8 ‘), but pressure from Bayern forced Konstantinos Mavropanos to score an own goal (35’). Thomas Müller turned the game around (44 ‘), but VfB striker Sasa Kalajdzic equalized (52’).
Due to the draw with Stuttgart, Arminia Bielefeld are now relegated. Stuttgart are still 16th with 30 points, DSC are next to bottom with 27, but have a much worse goal difference. VfB can still reach 15th place if they win and Hertha BSC lose on the final day of play, because Berlin (33 points) also has a record of worse successes.
Matarazzo has not yet controlled direct relegation
Satisfied with the result on the microphone of the sports program, the VfB coach Pellegrino Matarazzo: “We also had the chance to win the game with a little luck.” He did not want to forget to remain high in the league and concretely emphasized: “It is up to us to win next Saturday.”
His opponent Julian Nagelsmann was happy with the championship trophy, but admitted that it was “difficult” for him to pull the plug and celebrate: “In defense, we are giving too many chances against an opponent who is not playing a good season.” He still had a lot of work to do for next season, for example in terms of continuity.
Stuttgart is for Bayern just before the kick-off
Before the match began, Stuttgart showed respect to Munich and stood guard. It was completely different in the early stages of the game.
Because suddenly Omar Marmoush of Stuttgart had a great opportunity to take the lead after a high ball on the run. Tanguy Nianzou sprinted and got his foot in the middle at the last moment (7th).
High balls are leveraged on Bayern, a rebellious Munich
And high balls beyond Bayern’s chain remained the VfB’s preferred method. Once again Nianzou was beaten, again Marmoush put the turbo and gave it to Tomas, who threw the ball under the crossbar with a fantastic direct acceptance.
Obviously, the people of Monaco didn’t like the prospect of a spoiled championship celebration. And so the FCB went full throttle. Müller only hits the crossbar (12th), Leon Goretzka misses another first class goal (13th). After conceding goals, Bayern were superior and had a good 75% ball possession.
VfB failed to convert chances – Nianzou with problems
The VfB, which at least in theory tried with a 3-4-3 not to give space to the externals of Monaco Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman, was lurking on the counterattack.
Indeed, this approach could have led to a 2-0 win for the visitors, but like so many times this season, the VfB also lost this opportunity. Marmoush missed his second big chance – clear in front of Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer – after Nianzou once again proved to be a weak point (23 minutes).
The growing pressure from Bayern is too much for Stuttgart in ambush
But Bayern pushed and rewarded themselves before half-time: Joshua Kimmich, who played his 200th match in the Bundesliga, hung up for Gnabry, whose conclusion was overtaken by Stuttgart’s Konstantinos Mavroanos on his own line for the 1- 1.
And then Müller used Dayot Upamecano’s pass with his pike to put Monaco ahead: the game changed.
Kalajdzic headed for a draw – Monaco reveal shortcomings
Matarazzo apparently found the right words in the locker room, because Stuttgart gave their all after the recovery.
After Bayern’s Müller missed another great chance at the post (51 ‘), the guests cheered: Sosa hits the cross, Nianzou loses the head duel with Kalajdzic. Only shortly after the latter could have overturned the game again, but Kalajdzic was unable to pass in front of Neuer (54 ‘).
Bayern revealed weaknesses in defense. The talented Nianzou, in particular, often seemed unhappy and he finished the job after a good hour. He has been replaced by Niklas Süle (63rd), who will move to Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in the summer.
Brave Stuttgart offers Bavaria more than just fronts
Stuttgart, pushed by the difficult situation in the basement of the table, offered Munich more than just the front in the final phase. Stuttgart substitute Philipp Förster missed two first-class goals himself (75th / 81st).
In a final stage with open visors, VfB goalkeeper Müller sent a Robert Lewandowski (77) shot to the crossbar, the home side’s goal number three. Bayern’s Kingsley Coman saw the red card for an assault on Mavropanos (90 + 5).
