Boris Becker has been in prison for a week. The infamous Wandswoth Prison has been in the London Borough of Wandsworth since 1851. It is the second largest prison in England with a capacity of 1,416 inmates. The prison has a reputation for being tough and inflexible, and its guards are known to be particularly tough. Wikileaks founder Julien Assange and ex of supermodel Kate Moss, Pete Doherty, spent their time here – and now tennis legend Becker, too.

The former athlete was allowed to receive visitors in his first week of imprisonment. It is unusual for Wandsworth to allow inmates to be visited so early. Because these are thoroughly scrutinized here prior to arrival – and this can sometimes take several weeks. But Becker’s girlfriend, Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro, was already in prison. She reported that Becker is doing well under the circumstances. But the British newspaper “The Sun” now reveals to an insider what makes life really difficult for the 54-year-old behind bars.

According to the source, what he struggles with in prison is the menu:

“He’s having a hard time and worst of all is the food. He can’t believe how bad it is and how small the portions are. One of his first meals was canned meat, which wasn’t good.”

That’s why the sports icon uses the equivalent of nearly 12 euros in pocket money a week to enrich the menu with chocolate, biscuits and bananas from the canteen, according to the insider.

Becker can at least influence snacks a bit, but not the lack of on-site hygiene. The many smells and noise of over a thousand prisoners are said to annoy him and ensure poor sleep in the six-square-meter cell with little natural light, the tipster continues. Furthermore, he reports:

“The conditions are miserable, almost inhumane. It can be cold in the cells and there is hardly any daylight.”

Boris Becker is now sitting in Wandsworth for the next two and a half years due to the delay in insolvency. In reality he has to spend at least half of it in jail, only then does he have a chance to go out on probation for the rest of the time. But until then he’ll have to put up with mediocre corned beef and annoying roommates.
