Axel Witsel confirms his departure from BVB

Borussia Dortmund will have to plan without Axel Witsel from next season. The Belgian confirmed in a media round that he will permanently leave BVB after the end of the season.

Axel Witsel will no longer appear for Borussia Dortmund from next season. The Belgian confirmed this in a media group after the 3: 4 defeat in the derby against newly promoted VfL Bochum.

“We have conceded too many goals, this season and last season, we need to improve that for next season,” analyzed Witsel (quoted via “WAZ”) in yesterday’s match before adding: “I said ‘we’, but I will win it ‘if I am no longer there, I will leave next season “.

The rupture of the Achilles tendon caused a decline in performance

Witsel joined BVB from China’s first division Tianhai team in the summer of 2018 and has since played 143 competitive matches for Dortmund. The defensive midfielder won the DFB Cup with Ruhrpottklub in 2021, but did not take the field in the final against RB Leipzig (4-1). Due to an Achilles tendon tear, the 33-year-old had to give up for more than six months starting in January 2021. Since then he hasn’t been able to match his performance level.

It is not yet clear where the 120 Belgian international will end up. He himself said: “I’m not going back to Belgium. Not yet”.
