The 100 largest publicly traded companies in the world have achieved a new record in market capitalization. At the end of March 2022, the amount amounted to 35.17 trillion dollars (33.54 trillion euros), as announced on Monday by management consulting firm PwC. Compared to the previous year, the 100 largest companies gained 11% and hit a new record. US tech groups have achieved particularly high values.
According to PwC, the most valuable company in the world was, like the previous year, the Apple technology group. Its market cap was $ 2.85 trillion, up 39% year-on-year. Following Microsoft with a value of 2.31 trillion dollars, the Saudi oil company Aramco takes third place with 2.29 trillion dollars. Google’s parent company Alphabet and Amazon came in fourth and fifth with market capitalizations of $ 1.84 trillion and $ 1.65 trillion, respectively.
The most valuable companies on the stock exchange: technology groups dominate
Overall, according to PwC, the so-called global top 100 ranking shows the growing dominance of the technology sector. At the end of March 2022, 20 technology groups represented a total of 34% of the total market capitalization of the most valuable companies. “The healthcare sector has also grown significantly in recent years,” explained PwC partner Nadja Picard. The value of these companies in the PwC rankings increased by 84% between 2018 and 2022. The energy sector also experienced significant growth over the same period, with an increase of 151%.
Broken down by region, US companies dominated: 63 of the top 100 companies were headquartered in the United States, and another eleven companies were headquartered in China.
