29 “all-rounder with new features and 145 mm

Santa Cruz has completely redesigned the famous Hightower. The new variant of the 29 ″ all-rounder now has several features that are already known from the new Megatower. In addition to the finishing touches, the new Santa Cruz Hightower 2023 now also offers a practical luggage compartment in the down tube. We have all the information on the new Hightower!

Santa Cruz Hightower 2023: info and prices

Not long ago, the Hightower was the bike of choice for many Santa Cruz enduro riders. However, since the introduction of the Santa Cruz Megatower, the Hightower has been somewhat overshadowed by her long-distance brother. That probably won’t completely change with the Santa Cruz Hightower, which has been completely revised for 2023, but that’s not the point. Instead, the Hightower in the third phase of evolution wants to continue to be a bike for all situations. With 145mm of travel at the rear, modern geometry and well-thought-out features, the new Hightower 3 sits somewhere in the borderline between trail and enduro. Santa Cruz simply refers to it as a mountain bike, a classification we would certainly agree with.

The new Hightower 3 is Santa Cruz’s second 29 ″ mountain bike that has been radically revised this year. It was only in April that the Californians relaunched the Megatower enduro rider (click here for our Santa Cruz Megatower 2022 test). Now comes the Hightower, which with 145mm at the rear and slightly more moderate geometry aims to be Santa Cruz’s reasonable downhill all-rounder.

The storage compartment in the down tube is new
# The storage compartment in the down tube is new – all kinds of tools can be stored here. So you are perfectly equipped for the small runway side serve.

As usual, the new Hightower is available in the two carbon variants C (from 5,499 euros) and CC (from 8,999 euros). Additionally, Santa Cruz offers a frame kit for € 3,799. All variants have the down tube trunk, first introduced on the Megatower, which Santa Cruz affectionately calls the glove box. Tools, a spare tube and other essentials can be conveniently stowed in the frame of the cases, which Californians call Wallet and Purse.

Santa Cruz, among other things, has revised the routing of the cables.

Also known from the Megatower are the specific size adjustments, which are now also available for the Santa Cruz Hightower 3. Not only does the tail length and seat angle change with each of the five frame sizes. Santa Cruz also adjusts the stiffness of the main frame for each size. The Californians want to improve the driving quality of all drivers.

At the rear of the Hightower 3, the Santa Cruz is aiming for a more linear characteristic curve and a little more progression than the previous Hightower 2. As a result, the rear triangle should offer more support in the medium stroke and at the same time provide sufficient progression. on hard hits. Additionally, the anti-squat was reduced in the first half of the suspension travel. This should make the rear more sensitive to bumps and ensure better handling uphill and downhill.

As usual, the shock sits deep in the main frame, positioned just above the bottom bracket. This position ensures a low center of gravity, but makes it difficult to see the details on the shock. To increase ease of use, Santa Cruz has therefore integrated a lowering window into the frame. Thanks to the small opening, the negative spring travel can be read immediately, which should facilitate the installation process.

Practical: Thanks to the integrated viewing window, you can easily read the lowering of the shock absorber hidden deep in the frame.

The cable routing has been adjusted to ensure better shifting performance thanks to less friction. The bottom bracket is screwed as usual with Santa Cruz. In addition, the frame is extensively protected against damage at the rear and in the down tube area. Santa Cruz also offers a lifetime warranty just in case.

Geometry

The new Santa Cruz Hightower 2023 is available in a total of five sizes from S to XXL. All variants are based on 29 ″ wheels across. Additionally, the geometry can be converted to a high or low setting using a flip chip. The reach values are between 427 mm and 517 mm, the rear is between 432 mm and 444 mm long. A slow steering angle of 64.5 ° should provide plenty of control downhill. By switching to a steep setting, the steering and seat angles change by 0.3 ° each.
